Why use standards? If it works, it works!

When programming a web site, it is often suggested that we stick to the standards, but what are those standards, and why should we follow them? When I develop my site, I look at it in the browser. It works, so why should I bother to make it standards compliant?

You don't have to follow the standards to make a site work. Some standards are a but hard nosed and might make it difficult for you to do the page the way you want, so why not just hack away and make it look the way you want it to?

Horizontal Rules IE vs FireFox

I have been doing some contract work on a site that I have to make look right in FireFox, IE 7 and IE 6. That means a lot of CSS hacking. In the process I've learned some interesting facts that I'll be sharing. The first is the different ways that FF and IE handle Horizontal Rules .

Uptime Guarantees. Not all are equal.

I recently found out that not all uptime guarantees are equal. There are two major species of uptime guarantees: network and server. Server is better. First I'll explain what the two types mean and why server guarantees are better than network guarantees. Then I will discuss those percentages, what 99.9% uptime really means. Last I'll talk about free, low cost, and premium hosting and how much each really costs. For this article, we are just talking about shared hosting.
